As part of their 15-stop listening tour, the NC Rural Center visited Piedmont Community College (PCC) on October 17 to engage community leaders about the issues affecting rural communities.

With 78 out of North Carolina’s 100 counties being considered rural, the NC Rural Center’s mission is to develop, promote and implement sound economic strategies to improve the quality of life of rural North Carolinians. The Listening Tours serve as opportunities to hear from community representatives about the issues facing rural communities. The topics of discussion focused on physical infrastructure, education/training, healthcare, small business, along with social and civic infrastructure.

During their stop at PCC, NC Rural Center representatives divided attendees into three groups where they could discuss issues in a smaller setting. Specific issues discussed included availability of affordable housing, sewer expansion and improvement, and broadband and digital equity.

The NC Rural Center will be using topics from each Listening Tour stop to update the Rural Center 2025 policy agenda and to offer guidance on topics for the 2025 Rural Summit. The Rural Summit will be held March 25-26, 2025 in Raleigh, NC.

“It was an honor to have the NC Rural Center choose PCC as a stop on their Listening Tour,” Dr. Pamela G. Senegal, PCC president said. “I’m thankful for the opportunity our community had to discuss challenges facing our rural county.”
