Dr. Shawnee Seese’s journey is one that has come full circle with her appointment as the director of College and Career Readiness (CCR) and Continuing Education programs at Piedmont Community College (PCC).

Just like the students she will be serving, Seese also did not graduate from high school. As a young single mother facing significant challenges, she made the decision to return to school and earn her high school equivalency (HSE) diploma – a moment she describes as the most important achievement of her life. It was the first step in a long, determined path that would ultimately lead her to earn a Ph.D. in Public Policy and Administration.

The CCR program at PCC offers a second chance for adults seeking their HSE diploma. Serving individuals of all ages and backgrounds, the program provides instruction in core subjects and preparation for the HiSET® or GED® exams. More than academic instruction, CCR empowers students by building confidence, dignity and hope – paving the way to new opportunities and brighter futures.

As director, Seese is committed to expanding the impact of CCR through personalized learning plans, face-to-face classes, one-on-one tutoring, student-led peer support groups and practical workforce development workshops. Her goal is to ensure each student is not only educated but truly empowered.

One of her signature initiatives is the Voices of Success – HSE Champion Network, a mentorship program that pairs new students with HSE graduates who have overcome similar obstacles. The program fosters connection, encouragement and hope.

Under Dr. Seese’s leadership, CCR also continues its work with incarcerated individuals, offering them the chance to earn their high school equivalency diploma and build a new path forward after release.

As she begins this new chapter, she invites the PCC community and its partners to support this life-changing work.

“CCR is more than a program, it is a foundational, life-changing pillar of our college, and its ripple effects are felt throughout families, workplaces, and neighborhoods. It transforms lives, not just for today, but for a lifetime,” Seese said.
