Chief Duane Hampton has been the Chief of Police for the Town of Hillsborough since 2010. Prior to becoming the Chief in Hillsborough, he served for 16 years with the Durham Police Department where he worked as a patrol officer, traffic officer, training corporal, investigations sergeant and lieutenant.
Chief Hampton holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, his Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate, a Supervisory Certificate from North Carolina State University and a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech. Chief Hampton has been a law enforcement instructor since 1998 and holds specializations in firearms and driving. In addition to teaching for Piedmont Community College, he regularly teaches in the Alamance Community College BLET program and in Durham Technical Community College’s General Instructor curriculum. He has presented at national conferences including for ALERT International and the Destination Zero program.
Chief Hampton is an active member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police, and sits on the North Carolina League of Municipalities Chief’s Advisory Panel.
