North Carolina Board of Elections Approves College IDs as a form of photo identification

Piedmont Community College (PCC) student identification cards have been approved for use as photo identification by the North Carolina State Board of Elections (NCSBE) for voting for the 2024 primary and general elections in North Carolina.

“This initiative aims to eliminate potential barriers and encourage civic engagement,” Dr. Pamela G. Senegal, PCC President, said. “I’m grateful that our students have the option to use their PCC student IDs if needed.”

The requirement for voters to provide photo identification started in 2023 with municipal primary and general elections. Other acceptable forms of identification include:

  • North Carolina driver’s license.
  • State ID from the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Driver’s license or non-driver ID from another state if registered to vote in North Carolina within 90 days of the election.
  • U.S. Passport of U.S. Passport card.
  • North Carolina voter photo ID card issued by a county board of elections.
  • College student ID approved by the State Board of Elections.
  • State of local government or charter school employee ID approved by the State Board of Elections.

“It is imperative that every eligible voter exercises their fundamental right to vote,” Dr. Shelly Stone-Moye, PCC Vice President, Student Development, said. “By promoting student participation in elections, we enhance civic engagement both locally and on a broader scale. We take pride in being part of colleges and universities statewide whose students can utilize their institution-issued ID cards for valid identification at the polls.”

Early voting for the 2024 primary election is going on now through March 2 with same-day registration available. Primary Election Day will be held on March 5.

Early voting for the 2024 general election will be held October 17 – November 2 with Election Day taking place on November 5. For more information about the primary election and general election, visit the NCSBE website at www.ncsbe.gov/voting/upcoming-election#dates.
