Piedmont Community College’s (PCC) Vice President of Student Development, Dr. Shelly Stone-Moye, was selected to participate in the Lakin Institute, a professional development program sponsored by the Presidents’ Round Table of African American CEOs of community colleges.

The Thomas A. Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership is intended to prepare senior-level executives for roles as community college chief executive officers. It offers a personal and professional growth experience that includes interactive workshops that provide practical experience from national thought leaders. The Lakin Institute has graduated the highest number of African Americans who have gone on to CEO positions when compared to other leadership institutes in the United States. Notably, over 25% of current Black community college presidents are alumni of the Lakin Institute.

Stone-Moye was selected as one of 12 community college leaders to attend the 30th annual Thomas A. Lakin Institute for Mentored Leadership. She had the opportunity to attend the Institute October 13-19 in Hartford, Connecticut.

“The opportunity to learn from CEOs and Chancellors from across the United States has been an invaluable experience,” Stone-Moye said. “These successful and innovative executives shared insights and feedback that will play a pivotal role in shaping my professional growth and development, both now and in the future. Few leaders have the privilege of being recognized as a Lakin Fellow, and I am deeply honored and grateful for this remarkable opportunity.”

Stone-Moye is a dedicated higher education leader with over 20 years of experience. In her current role as Vice President of Student Development at PCC, she focuses on enhancing student success and engagement. Stone-Moye holds a Doctorate in Higher Education Executive Leadership from Wingate University, as well as degrees in Sociology from UNC Asheville and Social Work from Boston University. Her career began as an Academic Advisor and Counselor, and she remains committed to fostering holistic student development through leadership, professional development and community service.

“Dr. Stone-Moye’s selection as a Lakin Fellow is a testament to her exceptional leadership and dedication to student success,” Dr. Pamela G. Senegal, PCC president said. “Her participation in this prestigious program not only reflects her commitment to professional growth but also brings valuable insights and strategies back to PCC, enriching and furthering our mission.”
