Kelsey Weaver’s drive to go to college literally started with her driving down the road when she decided to stop by Piedmont Community College (PCC) to see what she needed to do to enroll.

She recalled that she hadn’t planned to go to PCC that day but had been wanting to do something for herself for quite some time. As a mother and wife who works full-time while homeschooling her daughters, she wanted the opportunity to do something for herself and to show her daughters that they can do anything they set their minds to.

The thought of going back to school after being out of high school for a decade seemed intimidating at first, but after speaking with an advisor, Weaver expressed feeling relieved and questioned why she hadn’t done this sooner.

Since graduating high school, Weaver has worked in healthcare in administrative type roles such as filing insurance and checking people in. After taking general education courses, she anticipates enrolling in the nursing program to be able to provide direct patient care.

Weaver admits that it’s been challenging juggling schoolwork along with other responsibilities, but she knows that it will be worth it in the end. She brings her laptop with her to work so that she can login and work on assignments during breaks and during lunch.

“I want them [her children] to know that I did it, I love them, and even though it kind of takes away a little bit of time from us, that I’m doing it for them, for myself,” Weaver said. “I hope that they look at that one day and say, ‘Okay, I can do that too.’”
