We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dr. H. James (Jim) Owen, Jr. on November 19 at age 87. Dr. Owen served as the third president of Piedmont Community College (PCC) for 22 years (1987-2009) until his retirement, leaving a lasting impact on our students, faculty, staff and community.

Under Dr. Owen’s leadership, the Caswell County Campus opened and was later expanded, doubling its size. In 2000, PCC saw unprecedented growth in its curriculum programs with an increase of 40% in four years and soaring enrollment in distance learning. During his tenure, PCC’s name changed from Piedmont Technical Institute to Piedmont Community College. Dr. Owen led PCC to increase the number of programs, services and opportunities available to students and was a champion of student success. His dedication to student success has continued through the Dr. H. James Owen endowment scholarship that will continue to support future students. He was a supporter of economic development through College services, opening the business incubator in uptown Roxboro in 1994, which is now known as the Business Development and Entrepreneurship Center (BDEC). Even after his retirement, Dr. Owen and his wife Leah would frequently attend PCC events. His leadership and unwavering commitment to education will continue to inspire us.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and all who were touched by his legacy. Obituary and funeral arrangements can be found here.
